We were asked recently by a local school to provide one of our traditional hog roasts for 30 of their pupils who were on a history field trip. They came to Hog Roast Penwortham because they wanted a catering company who could cook outdoors in any location and provide tasty food using traditional cooking methods that would fit with the educational theme of the day. The plan for the school trip was a visit to a local museum and a tour of some Roman ruins, followed by a tasty hog roast buffet for the pupils as a reward for all that learning! The aim of the trip was the get the children more interested in local history by interacting and connecting with it, rather than just reading about it from a book in the classroom, and to encourage them to become more aware of their area’s heritage by actually stopping to look at it and learn about the places they walk past on the way to school every day. The Headteacher thought hiring Hog Roast Penwortham would be a great incentive to get the pupils motivated to learn, rather than them having their usual lacklustre packed lunch afterwards!
The combination of escaping from the classroom to get up close and personal with history, and the enticing aroma of our hog roast being cooked in the open air using ancient cooking methods worked like a charm! Before too long, a miraculous transformation had taken place amongst the history class, as one by one they turned into budding archaeologists and really started taking an interest in the historical site. Hog Roast Penwortham’s presence created exactly the right ambience the teachers were looking for and helped the pupils to visualise what life would have been like for the people of times gone by who actually lived and worked on the now ruined site. The pupils also loved the food and they all felt it was much more authentic (and tasty!) to have an open-air hog roast like their ancestors would have done, than to end the morning sitting under a tree eating a soggy sandwich!
